This master bathroom remodel in Encinitas was designed around the homeowner’s mobility needs. Featuring a new and improved layout to create wider access for a wheelchair, reposition the bathroom entrance directly across from the bed, and incorporate practical aging-in-place solution like grab bars and adjusted shower fixtures while maintaining a clean, modern design.

The Challenge

The original bathroom layout was narrow, with the vanity separated from the toilet and shower by a wall and door. This configuration made it difficult to access the shower area safely, especially considering the homeowner wanted to plan ahead for the possibility of needing wheelchair access in the future. On top of that, the space still had outdated finishes, carpet flooring outside the wet area, and very limited storage. To make the bathroom both functional and comfortable, the layout needed to be completely rethought.

The Solution

To meet the homeowners needs, we completely rebuilt the bathroom and expanded its footprint to improve functionality and accessibility. The old shower enclosure was removed and replaced with a larger walk-in shower featuring large format (12″x24″) marble-looking tile, built-in wall niches, and frameless sliding glass. Grab bars were added for additional support, and the carpeted floor outside the wet area was replaced with slip resistant porcelain tile. We combined that with new vanity, extra recessed lighting and modern chrome fixtures.

Our favorite part? 36″ wide entrance with a sliding barn door between the bedroom and bathroom (wheelchair accessible).
