How much does the average bathroom remodeling in San Diego cost?
The average bathroom remodel cost in San Diego typically ranges between $20,000-$40,000. That includes any standard size hallway or guest bathrooms and even smaller master bathrooms. The average bathroom remodel cost is mostly affected by what materials are selected and how much work needs to be done behind the walls (plumbing, electrical, ventilation).
What the statistics say and why it can be misleading
Unfortunately for a lot of homeowners who will be reading this, as of 2026, you live in one of the most expensive regions in the entire country. Meaning, the cost of doing business is expensive. On average, San Diego residents report spending between $11,231 – $24,487 on their bathroom remodel (based on data from Angi list).
Then when we actually looked at our numbers from all the bathrooms we’ve worked on since 2020, we found that our average is probably double than those numbers.
How is that possible? We know we are very competitive with our pricing and are far from being the most expensive builders out there.
Well, a random survey of homeowners doesn’t specify the scope of work for each project.
So you end up with a mess of inaccurate averages, mixing someone’s small guest bathroom renovation with another steam room shower with heated floors.
Example: the same size bathroom (typical hallway 5’x10′ bathroom) can cost closer to $20,000 if it’s in a home that was built in the early 00′ and you’re buying all you finish material from stock inventory from Wayfair and Home Depot.
On the other hand, take the same bathroom and put it in a house built in the 60′, where there’s mold behind the tile, electrical is messed up and the drains are cast iron and require cutting through your house’s slab foundation to replace. All of a sudden, the same bathroom remodel becomes 50% more expensive.
That’s why you have to take into consideration your own specific scenario when building out your bathroom remodel budget. A bathroom remodeling contractor will be able to assess all of these things during a site visit so that your estimated budget is as accurate as possible.

1. Finish materials
Finish materials include all the visible elements in the bathroom such as tile, fixtures, vanities, countertops, lighting, and paint. These selections have one of the largest impacts on the final price because quality and design preferences vary widely.
High-end materials like natural stone tile, custom cabinetry, or premium plumbing fixtures can significantly increase the cost, while pre-fabricated vanities and standard ceramic tile can keep the budget lower.
Typical finish material budgets:
- Material for Small bathroom remodel: $2,000-$3,000
- Material for Mid-size bathroom remodel: $3,000-$4,500
- Material for Large custom bathroom remodel : $4,500-$10,000+
What materials are worth splurging on?
“The more you use it, the better it should be”.
We try to give this advice with every remodeling project, not just bathroom remodels. For example, all the bathroom fixtures (faucets, shower system, tub) are components that come in contact with water on a daily basis. They will suffer the most amount of wear-and-tear and need to withstand for the longest period of time without breaking. It is wise when working with a tighter budget to allocate larger portions to these types of material, rather that going of looks alone (Yes, you can get a really beautiful LED mirror for $700, but if the trade-off is a full shower system from a random manufacturer on amazon for $200, your priorities are a little off).Juggling between quality, looks & value-for-dollar is the name of the game. Since every bathroom remodeling project is different, with different set of goals in mind, working with an interior designer or design build contractor can help get the best outcome and not get overwhelmed with the different options.

There are definitely some exceptions that are not listed above, for example In the last few years a lot of complete bathroom remodels include the installation of barn doors instead of their regular swing entry door (if you like that style see our guide for 17 different creative barn door ideas). Some of them can cost as much as $2,000 or more, depending on if they are custom or pre-made.
2. Rough material
Rough materials include the construction components that are used to prepare all the work behind the walls and install the finish material later on. These items are essential for the structure and functionality of the bathroom but are often overlooked when budgeting.
Examples include:
- Plumbing pipes and fittings
- Shower waterproofing systems
- Cement board and backer board
- Electrical wiring and boxes
- Framing lumber
- Sheetrock
In many bathroom remodels, rough materials can represent 10-20% of the total project cost, depending on how much plumbing or structural work is required.
3. Labor
Labor is usually the largest portion of a bathroom remodel budget in San Diego. A typical project requires coordination between multiple trades including plumbers, electricians, tile installers, drywall specialists, painters, and finish carpenters.
Depending on the complexity of the renovation, labor can account for 45-70% of the total remodel cost.
Projects that involve moving plumbing lines, relocating fixtures, or installing complex tile patterns require significantly more labor than smaller cosmetic updates.
Working with a licensed general contractor specializing in bathroom remodels helps coordinate these trades and ensure the work is completed up to code and on schedule.
4. Design and permits
The smallest part of the bathroom remodel cost goes to design and permits. That usually consists of about 2%-10%. For example, if your bathroom remodel costs $50,000, roughly $2,500-$5,000 of that goes to paying for the building permit and associated fees plus an interior design that helps with the material selections and the stylistic oversight to the project.

Hidden factors that can increase bathroom remodel costs
Even well-planned bathroom remodels sometimes uncover conditions after the project starts that increase the final price, especially in older homes from the 50’s-80’s. During demolition or construction, contractors occasionally discover issues that were impossible to see beforehand.
Common examples include:
- Moving plumbing lines to change the layout
- Structural framing repairs inside the walls
- Electrical panel capacity limitations
- Lead paint or asbestos in older homes
In some cases, a bathroom that initially looks simple can increase in cost by $5,000-$10,000 if asbestos is discovered in the wall boards and wood rot is found throughout the bathroom framing that wasn’t visible before demolition.
